The question “Will we die in 2012 because the Mayan calendar runs out?” is being asked with increasing frequency as we move from 2009 in 2010 and beyond. Supposedly, the world is going to end in 2012 when this calendar runs out of days, though it is just as often the case that just as many people are able to point to a myriad of apocalyptic scenarios that have never proven themselves out in history.

As to the specific nature of the calendar itself and whether or not it really does run out and what it can portend for all of us, many experts have taken the time to study it and most will say that the calendar itself actually doesn’t run out. They make no guarantees, though, about these apocalyptic or end-time scenarios because they are not a matter for logic but are, rather, a matter for emotion.

Collectively, the phenomenon known as “2012″ can be given to a variety of proposals and beliefs that try to argue for some sort of transformative, cataclysmic or even apocalyptic event that will take place in that year, specifically on either December 21 or December 23, 2012. These are the two dates in which the calendar is supposed to come to some sort of an end in a technical sense.

These dates have been arrived at by people who have examined what scholars call the Mayan Long Count Calendar (this is the formal name). Many of these people have purported to have found the beginning and ending range of the calendar, which is supposedly 5125 years long. Many arguments for an apocalypse make use of mythology and ancient astronomical calculations that probably aren’t accurate.

Additionally, many predictions for something occurring on December 21 or December 23, 2012 make use of certain numerological calculations and even prophecies made by extraterrestrial beings that are non-falsifiable, meaning that there is no way to prove them false because they do not exist on the plane of existence with which we, as humans, are familiar or which most likely does not even exist.

In the main, any Mayan scholar of professional integrity can make an extremely convincing argument that the calendar comes to some sort of an end in 2012 seem to be completely ridiculous, especially when actual Mayan history is represented truthfully. Modern day Mayans actually consider 2012 to be fairly irrelevant, and most historical Mayan sources are either contradictory or very scarce.

However, supporters of the theory that we will die in 2012 maintain that something such as a collision with a rogue planet or an alignment of our planet with a black hole is bound to occur. A typical cataclysmic event consists of our magnetic poles shifting. However, again, most such claims are based on pseudoscientific theory that violates just about every law of physics known in science.

There seems to be a certain tendency by humans to fear for the extinction of the human race, though the idea that the human race will be wiped out because some sort of calendar by an ancient civilization is going to run out is a new one for this millennia. For sure, every other apocalyptic movement has been proven false, though every believer in them tends to find an excuse for why the world just didn’t end.
