Easy Tips On How To Save A Marriage
All relationships can become difficult if not impossible. Even best friends can have days when they can’t stand being near each other. College roommates can have disagreements over just plain stupid things, and husbands and wives can end up in divorce court without truly understanding how they got there. Learning how to save a marriage isn’t easy, but it’s possible.
No matter what type of relationship you’re in, it took both of you to get to where you are. One of the biggest problems facing any marriage is when one person does something almost unforgivable, the other party literally turns into a different person - accusing, withdrawn, vindictive, and even worse.
When your spouse says, “We have a problem”- listen. Ignoring obvious signs like this means you just don’t care enough to hear the concerns. If you refuse to listen, or return accusations, all you are doing is exacerbating the problem at hand. When you refuse to change your behavior or even listen, you are in effect screaming, “I don’t care enough about you or us to hear you talk about our problems”.
A good marriage is based on love and mutual respect. Without that, no relationship will flourish or last long at all. Once your partner believes you have lost interest - it’s a steady spiral down if you don’t check yourself and adapt some correction action.
If you head to a marriage counselor, the first question you will hear is, “Do you want to save your marriage?” The assumption is usually that of course you do, since you are there. But how many people have been all but dragged to marriage counseling and they did not want to be there? Answer the question honestly - if you want to save your marriage, then work on it. If you don’t, then leave.
Simple things can usually keep a marriage strong, and even repair some serious damage: flowers for no reason, attending an event you aren’t too interested in, offering to help around the house rather than sitting around playing video games, have meaningful conversations.
Above all else: listen, communicate, stop yelling, pay attention, and be attentive.
