Science or Witchcraft - Is Science Magic?
Why has witchcraft always been shunned while scientist has been help in high esteem? By this point in history we understand that some every day science we experience all the time would seem like magic to our ancestors. Perhaps it is because magic was practiced under cover while science was being published and practiced in the open. Perhaps it is simply because witchcraft is associated with women while science is associated with men.
Even though we can argue that the biblical injunction against witches, really meant bad witches, and not good ones like Glenda, the term raises eyebrows in any organized, conservative religion. Famous biblical figures did consult with witches, though it was obvious they really were not supposed to be the prohibitions of their time. But the actual women who practiced these arts, like the Witch of Endor, are presented in a sympathetic light.
There is a famous book and video that has been circulating around. It has attracted tons of media attention, and it is all about creative visualization. It is called The Secret. This is simply the art or science of creative visualization, and it was probably thought to be magic in another age.
Most modern spell casters will tell you that their art is mostly mental. They are aided by some actual props, but some of those have been studied. And they have proved to be effective by science.
Herbs are another example. We all know that modern medicine evolved from the ancient herbalists lore. Consider natural painkillers or sleep aids like willow bark and chamomile. How different is brewing a tea than prescribing a pill?
And lots of essential oils are used in spells. But nowadays the art of aromatherapy has been proved effective. Rosemary and orange are stimulating, while mint may be relaxing. Is this the occult, or is it simply using nature to benefit mankind?
And scientists are just now admitting that the mind may be more powerful than we know, and that we barely understand our own brains. Is there something to the actual spells and incantations that focuses the mental power of the caster?
The ancients may have called it magic, but tomorrow we may take it for granted as common science.
